Symptomatic hypocalcemia following intravenous administration of zoledronic acid in a breast cancer patient.

چکیده
B isphosphonates are increasingly being incorporated in the management of patients with breast cancer.[1] With wider adoption of bisphosphonates, the incidence of some rare complications like hypocalcaemia might go up, particularly in vitamin D deficient populations. Here we would like to share our experience of managing a patient, who developed symptomatic hypocalcaemia after intravenous (IV) infusion of zoledronic acid, to highlight the need of anticipating this preventable, and potentially fatal complication.

Prolonged zoledronic acid-induced hypocalcemia in hypercalcemia of malignancy.
Zoledronic acid is a parenteral long-acting bisphosphonate that has been shown to be more effective than other bisphosphonates in treating hypercalcemia of malignancy. It is important to be aware of its ability to induce prolonged and severe hypocalcemia (hypoCa) following administration, which can be difficult to control despite aggressive calcium replacement. We report on a patient with metas...
متن کاملSevere resistant hypocalcemia in multiple myeloma after zoledronic acid administration: a case report
INTRODUCTION Hypercalcemia is one of the most common metabolic abnormalities encountered in any form of malignancy. Hypocalcemia, however, is a rare manifestation, especially in cancers with bone involvement. Here we present a case of hypocalcemia in a patient with multiple myeloma that was refractory to treatment. CASE PRESENTATION A 73-year-old African American woman recently diagnosed with...
متن کاملEffects of zoledronic acid and ibandronic acid on renal functions and calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels in breast cancer patients with bone metastases: a retrospective analysis
AIM OF THE STUDY Bone is a common site of metastasis in patients with breast cancer. Skeletal complications associated with bone metastasis are commonly treated with bisphosphonates. However, there are a number of side-effects associated with these, such as renal failure, hypocalcemia and osteonecrosis of the jaw. We aimed to determine the effects of ibandronic and zoledronic acid on serum crea...

PURPOSE This randomized study compared denosumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody against receptor activator of nuclear factor κ B (RANK) ligand, with zoledronic acid in delaying or preventing skeletal-related events (SREs) in patients with breast cancer with bone metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients were randomly assigned to receive either subcutaneous denosumab 120 mg and intravenous...
متن کاملZoledronic acid treatment at home: safety data from an observational prospective trial.
BACKGROUND To prospectively assess feasibility, side effects, and safety of a home treatment with zoledronic acid in patients with bone metastases confined to home. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-two patients with bone metastases (15 males and 27 females; mean age, 72 years; range, 48-86), confined to home because of functional impairment or low performance status, were enrolled into the trial. T...
